Will Todd, Associate Counsel
Will Todd is associate counsel at DLA Piper’s Vancouver office where, since 2008, he has chaired the Taxation – Wills, Estates and Trusts Practice Group. He provides tax and estate planning solutions for Canadian-resident U.S. citizens and their family members and Canadians holding or acquiring U.S. real property, among others with cross-border tax exposure. He is a member of the British Columbia and Ontario bars and is also admitted to practice law in New York and Massachusetts.
Will advises clients about their tax and estate planning and using wills, trusts and other vehicles (including charitable giving) to minimize taxes on death. His advice often relates to cross-border estate planning for clients subject to the laws in Canada and the United States (by reason of marriage, residency, domicile, citizenship or the location of assets).
His tax practice includes analysis of U.S. gift, estate and generation skipping taxes, the Canadian tax rules for spousal and non-resident trusts and the Canada-U.S. Tax Convention. Clients seeking his advice on cross-border estate planning reside in British Columbia, other regions of Canada, the United States and abroad.
Wills’ extensive business law background is often called upon to help clients seeking to transition businesses to future generations in a tax-effective and business-enhancing fashion. Will lectures to client groups, to lawyers, to accountants and to the public on topics pertaining to cross-border aspects of wills, estates and taxation.
